COVID-19 update

Hi, As previously announced Netdev 0x14 is to be held in Vancouver, Canada from June 16th to 19th, 2020. However, based on the fluidity of the current conditions in North America and around the world, the Netdev Society board is considering the following alternative options: - A virtual version of the conference - A hybrid version which includes the conference location and distributed remote locations At this point we are actively planning for a virtual version of the conference and looking at the involved logistics. The later option can only happen if there is improvement in the situation in specific clusters where our community is based. We will announce on the 10th of May(Mothers day) if we are confident that conditions have improved enough for any form of physical presence in Vancouver (and/or elsewhere) or whether we will instead be opting for a full virtual conference. We will be sending out a survey to all registered attendees soon to help us understand the community’s preferences about the aspects of this (and any future virtual meetings). Your participation in that survey will provide critical feedback we will need for planning purposes. So please please plan to spend 5-10 minutes responding to the survey. 0x14: COVID-19 update, postponement of Netdev conf 0x14

Hi, After much deliberation, due to the Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) the NetDev Society board has decided to postpone the conference scheduled to happen in Vancouver, BC March 17th-20, 2020. Netdev Society has been consulting with attendees and sponsors, monitoring health organizations, and trying to work with government and corporate imposed restrictions on travel and event attendance. The conclusion reached is that for the health and wellbeing of the community, it is best to postpone the conference at this time. We understand that this is an unfortunate situation for everyone, and very much appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. The new tentative date for Netdev conference is June 16 to 19th, 2020 at the same location. Please note that this date is tentative due to the unpredictability of the Coronavirus. What happens to registration: 1. If you are already registered then no action is needed. All registrations are applied to the new date for the conference. 2. If you cannot make the new date for the conference, you can cancel registration for a refund minus a 7% processing fee. To cancel registration please send a request to registrar(a)netdevconf.info. 3. Conference registration will remain open. If you have not registered and intend to attend the conference for the new date you may do so at current rates. 0x14: Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We would like to provide more updates on our planning around Coronavirus (COVID-19). This update is based on the current state of affairs. We will provide more updates as the situation changes. Conference registration levels are continuing at the expected rates as previous two netdev conferences. As mentioned in past communication, here's what we are using for guidance on our decisions: 1) There are two *larger* conferences that are happening in Vancouver at the same time frame and neighborhood as us. We are in particular paying attention and communicating with our friends at the IETF drawing guidance from them. IETF has a much larger staff than us and we are grateful and lucky that we can draw on their resources to guide us. IETF is reporting that their registration is continuing per expectation. 2) We are also constantly monitoring the guidelines provided by World Health Organisation (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019) and Public Health Agency of Canada (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronav…) neither of these organization are recommending cancelling meetings at this point. https://apps.who.int/iris/rest/bitstreams/1269109/retrieve For Netdev conf 0x14, we are going to implement the following guidelines which we draw from what the IETF 107 is putting in place: 1. Measures to prevent transmission by surface contact: a) We will provide all in-person participants with hand sanitizer and surface wipes free of charge. Surface wipes will be available in multiple rooms for cleaning any shared equipment or surfaces, such as microphones and door handles. b) We are going to ask that you do not feel obliged to shake hands with anyone and also do not feel offended if anyone declines to do so. 2. Measures for anyone who feels unwell to prevent them spreading infection: a) We are setting aside a room as an isolation room supplied with masks and a thermometer for anyone who feels ill during the meeting. b) We are making arrangements with a local clinic so that we can call a doctor to attend to anyone in self-imposed isolation to minimise their travel through communal areas. 3. Guidelines for travellers who are from highly affected areas where travel is government restricted. Currently, as per WHO, some parts of China fall under this class. If you are planning to register or have registered, and arriving from China (or have passed through the China recently) please contact us first we will like to discuss with you remote participation as an alternative. 4. Guidelines for attendees affected by corporate travel restrictions: We are looking at setting up satellite location(s). A satellite location makes sense when we have a good number of attendees willing to participate. If you think you fit in this setup, please contact us. We are investigating logistics of good video conferencing facilities that will work well with the conference AV setup. 5. (As previously advised) Changes to our cancellation policy: a) Anyone who is unable to attend due to government imposed travel restrictions will be eligible for a full refund. b) We will continue with the normal policy of providing a full refund to anyone who is unable to travel due to visa issues. c) We will not be offering full refunds in the event of someone being unable to travel due to corporate restrictions - the cancellation fee will still apply. Hi, With our conference date approaching we would like to update you on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) issue as related to the conference. We plan to provide more updates in the next few days. For now, the NetDev Society board would like to state the following: We understand that as part of human nature some people are very concerned about the risk to health, and that some other events have been cancelled or switched to a remote-only model and infact some companies are putting corporate travel restrictions into place. However, it remains our view that there are significant risks in both under-reacting and over-reacting to this complex and developing situation, and as we are not epidemiologists or public health experts we will follow the evidence-based advice of those that are. Netdev 0x14 Remote participation

Hi Jamal, I attended netdev 0x14 last year and find it very educational, informative as well as engaging. But I cannot travel for 4 days in addition to IETF 107. Therefore, I was wondering if there is a possibility of remote participation? I am aware that videos are generally available on YouTube (Which will be last resort), but anything live is always better. Thanks Kiran

We are honored to announce networking industry visionary Nick McKeown as the keynote speaker for Netdev 0x14. Nick McKeown has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University since 1995. In 2005, he started the Clean Slate Program at Stanford, which with Martin Casado and Scott Shenker, led to "Software Defined Networking". He co-founded Nicira (now part of VMware), Abrizio, and Nemo ("Network Memory", now part of Cisco), as well as ONF, ON.Lab, and P4.org. He also co-founded Barefoot Networks in 2013, which was recently acquired by Intel, where he is now Senior Fellow. His current passion is to move the network data-plane from fixed-function hardware up and into software where it belongs. He hopes this will foster much faster innovation in networking, and finally hand over the keys to those who own and operate networks, to customize them to best suit their needs. Nick is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK). He received the British Computer Society Lovelace Medal (2005), the IEEE Kobayashi Computer and Communications Award (2009), the ACM Sigcomm Lifetime Achievement Award (2012), and an Honorary Doctorate from ETH (Zurich, 2014). What does Nick want to talk to us about? Nick has a vision on how we can work together to realize a world where owners of large networks can express the behavior they want in their network using a high-level language, and then seamlessly compile and deploy it across all their various network devices. 0x14: nutsnbolts, Performance improvements for NVMe/TCP

In this talk Sagi Grimberg will look back at the journey and experience gained so far in the last year since introduction of kernel NVMe/TCP. He will then build on that context to describe various experiments conducted to measure performance - more importantly the latency achieved with current kernel NVMe/TCP. Part of the experiments will explore different NIC vendors' features (Intel ADQ, Mellanox aRFS, etc) that can be put to bear on behalf of improving overall performance and latency. Sagi hopes to create a discussion based on some suggestions on what he believes are useful enhancements that can be made to the driver.
