0x14: First Virtual session - Keynote speaker, Nick McKeown.

We are honored to announce networking industry visionary Nick McKeown as the keynote speaker for Netdev 0x14. Virtual Session will be on July 28, 2020 3PM GMT. Nick McKeown has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University since 1995. In 2005, he started the Clean Slate Program at Stanford, which with Martin Casado and Scott Shenker, led to "Software Defined Networking". He co-founded Nicira (now part of VMware), Abrizio, and Nemo ("Network Memory", now part of Cisco), as well as ONF, ON.Lab, and P4.org. He also co-founded Barefoot Networks in 2013, which was recently acquired by Intel, where he is now Senior Fellow. His current passion is to move the network data-plane from fixed-function hardware up and into software where it belongs. He hopes this will foster much faster innovation in networking, and finally hand over the keys to those who own and operate networks, to customize them to best suit their needs. Nick is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK). He received the British Computer Society Lovelace Medal (2005), the IEEE Kobayashi Computer and Communications Award (2009), the ACM Sigcomm Lifetime Achievement Award (2012), and an Honorary Doctorate from ETH (Zurich, 2014). What does Nick want to talk to us about? Nick has a vision on how we can work together to realize a world where owners of large networks can express the behavior they want in their network using a high-level language, and then seamlessly compile and deploy it across all their various network devices. Reminder + update on registration process

Hi, This is a reminder to everyone who registered before we moved from a physical to a virtual conference and has so far not responded to our earlier request. To encourage responses, we are putting a deadline to June 21 to hear back on what option you'd like to proceed with. If we dont hear back by June 21st we will assume a default option (more below). Reminder: The virtual conference is CDN $100. So far we have offered 3 options for moving from physical to virtual: 1) Get reimbursement for the difference between what you paid and $100. 2) Defer the reimbursement and make it part of your registration fee for the next conference. 3) Unregister and get your fee back (minus 7% processing cost). Based on feedback we have received since the last announcement we are offering a 4th option: Registration "with support option". In this 4th option we dont reimburse you - rather we issue an invoice which shows line items that look similar to the following example: --- Canceled In-Person Netdev meeting refund (475 CAD) Virtual Netdev 0x14 meeting fee (support-option) 475 CAD Total Due 0 CAD ---- The support-option registration simplifies our accounting and book-keeping work/costs as well as helps us financially. In addition, it is our understanding (based on feedback) that it may simplify some people's lives in large corporations where a reimbursement requires extra time consuming process for the reimbursed attendee. If we dont receive a response by June 21st we will assume a default of option 2. I.e we will keep the difference for the next conference. Should you wish to cancel at any time before the next conference it will be subject to our standard policies and cancellation fees being applied (appropriate for the time you cancel). Please send email to: registrar at netdevconf.info stating what option(of the 4 listed above) you'd like to go with and present us a copy of your registration receipt to assist us in processing. It is very important you send us that registration receipt to save us time in processing. If you can't find your registration receipt then still reach out to us but state that explicitly in your email. Reminder: If you cancel your registration(option #3) after we ship the tshirt/badge/sticker to you, the regular cancellation fee of 50% will apply instead of the 7% processing fee. We plan to start shipping tshirts etc around June 21. When you submit a request, please be patient with us since the process is a bit manually intensive (and we still have volunteers doing some of the work). To be more efficient we need to collect a batch of requests and process them in one sitting. These batches will be processed once a week for all outstanding requests from the week before. So ping us only if you havent heard back in over a week. cheers, jamal

COVID-19 update

Hi, As previously announced Netdev 0x14 is to be held in Vancouver, Canada from June 16th to 19th, 2020. However, based on the fluidity of the current conditions in North America and around the world, the Netdev Society board is considering the following alternative options: - A virtual version of the conference - A hybrid version which includes the conference location and distributed remote locations At this point we are actively planning for a virtual version of the conference and looking at the involved logistics. The later option can only happen if there is improvement in the situation in specific clusters where our community is based. We will announce on the 10th of May(Mothers day) if we are confident that conditions have improved enough for any form of physical presence in Vancouver (and/or elsewhere) or whether we will instead be opting for a full virtual conference. We will be sending out a survey to all registered attendees soon to help us understand the community’s preferences about the aspects of this (and any future virtual meetings). Your participation in that survey will provide critical feedback we will need for planning purposes. So please please plan to spend 5-10 minutes responding to the survey. The survey will be sent only to folks who have registered. If you want to participate in the survey and are not registered please ping us at info(a)netdevconf.info cheers, jamal
